see situation

One of the great benefits of attending an IPT is learning to spot the important stuff. This skill is developed by keeping your eyes open, understanding the relationship between light, sky conditions, and wind direction, understanding that bird behavior is often repetitive, and thinking creatively.

With egrets and egrets catching bait below the pier, knowing exactly where to make the most of this great opportunity was the most important piece of the puzzle. That's where I put the group 🙂

Why the priority of roller blinds in this situation?

It was a very difficult situation, since near the pier it was much less light than when the birds flew away. And the hue of the water was darker near the pier. As a result, the two images with the darkest water, images #2 (perfect) and #4 (solid perfect), were excellent exposures. The image with the lightest background, Image #3, was severely underexposed. Photo #1 was right in the middle. In some difficult situations you have to make a compromise decision. And that's true whether you opt for manual mode or an automatic mode as your shutter priority (as I did with the four images featured today).

square cultures

As with two of the images featured today (#1 and #3), the photos of the bird flying towards us work very well as square crops. When the bird flies from one side of the frame to the other (images #2 and #4), the 2X3 cuts tend to look much better.

Fort DeSoto, just south of St. Petersburg, FL, is a mecca for terns and gulls, shorebirds, and springtime shorebirds. Many of the birds will be in full breeding plumage. Simply put, DeSoto is the new thing, honey. Migratory birds are plentiful and many are extremely tame. We should have great opportunities with the terns and sandwiches and dark red and white herons. Great egret, white heron, blue heron, tricolor heron and white ibis are also easy and we will almost certainly find a tame great heron or two along with a few American oystercatchers. We will enjoy excellent aerial photos, especially with the brown pelicans.

Other than that!

We were also going to photograph a variety of other shorebirds, including Black-bellied Plover, Palm Plover, Wilson's Plover, Snowy Plover and Plover, Willow Plover, Sandpiper, Rosy-billed Pike, Curlew, and mainly the reddish knot, with many individuals in its beautiful reproduction. plumage. In spring, the T-shaped peninsula and newly formed sandbar, Outback Key, is literally teeming with bird treasures.

If we're lucky, we'll be able to photograph one of Florida's most sought after species: the Roseate Spoonbill. And we will surely get some aerial photos of the brown pelican. Hopefully the black-headed gulls will land on their heads. And while it's not guaranteed, Wood Stork can certainly be expected. And with a storm or two, we're on the lookout for a rush of migrating passerines.

What you will learn at a DeSoto IPT

  • 1- The fundamentals and details of the digital exhibition; how to get the correct exposure every time after a single test exposure (or sooner if using SONY equipment).
  • 2- How and why to work in manual mode (even if you are afraid).
  • 3- How to approach free and wild birds without disturbing them.
  • 4- A lot about the behavior of birds and how you can use this knowledge to create better images.
  • 5- To age and identify many species of shorebirds, including various shorebirds, plovers, witchbirds, and possibly yellowlegs.
  • 6- Identify good situations and choose the best perspective.
  • 7- See, evaluate and understand light.
  • 8- To create beautiful images by mastering the AF system of your camera.
  • 9- And perhaps most importantly, evaluate the wind and sky conditions and understand how they affect bird photography.
  • 10- More than you can imagine.

Die Details

Morning sessions last two and a half to three hours; Afternoon sessions at two. There is never a fixed schedule in an IPT, we adapt to the conditions. On cloudy mornings with favorable winds we can choose to shoot until noon and skip the afternoon session. This is especially the case when the afternoon weather looks iffy. We may choose to attend a great daycare in north Tampa if conditions warrant.

One Photoshop/Image Review session will take place before and after lunch (included) on each of the three full days. This is followed by the nap time instructor. Each of these IPTs will be done with only one registrant, as I don't want to let anyone down. The best airport is Tampa (TPA). Upon registration, you will receive an email with the accommodation information. Please note that it is always best for IPT staff to stay in the same general area (rather than at home or with a friend some distance away).

The participants of this IPT will be in the field as soon as possible and will stay out late to enjoy the colors of the sunrise and sunset; This is pretty much a staple on almost every BIRDS AS ART photo tour. This often creates unique photo opportunities, opportunities to be missed by those in need of a beauty break and those who need to go home for a proper dinner. I really love it when I leave the beach at 9:30 on a sunny morning after a great shoot, just as a car or two full of well-rested photographers pull up... Let's get wet.

Your deposit of $599 is due now. Credit cards are fine for this. You can apply with a credit card in hand by calling Jim or Jennifer during business hours at 863-692-0906.
